While the 100+ temperatures might have kept a few people home, the crowd of several hundred enthusiasts was treated to smoky burnouts, several 70 mph passes on the 1/10-mile strip (there were more than 300 runs made) and for the first-time cash payout to the class winners.
In addition this year 2 memorial plaques were presented in honor of Mike Spangler, a fabricator, inventor, builder, designer and longtime member of San Luis Roadsters who recently passed away after a long battle with cancer. A plaque and $500.00 were presented to the Best Specialty Car chosen by the San Luis Roadsters Club members, and presented by Mike’s daughter Heather to Art Serna, Lindsay, for his immaculately restored ’31 Model A Roadster. Wesley Eisenga, piloting Bob Miller’s ’30 Model A Speedster, #1A was presented with the plaque and cash for the fastest time of the day by Rob Rossi, a lifelong friend of Spangler’s, representing the Santa Margarita Ranch, a fitting climax to a fun day of racing.
Plan on attending this annual event, the second Saturday in July, as Phil, Barbara, and the devoted volunteers will again host this day of F.A.S.T. Santa Margarita Ranch Time Trials…you can check out the group on Facebook to keep abreast of the happenings throughout the year…
