While the count was down from previous years with 22 F/C’s in the pits compared to the past 30+ entries, times and speed were up with 2016 champion Kris Krabill laying down a 5.552 a new NHRA Heritage Series elapsed time record, combined with his 261.62 mph, putting him in as the sixth member of the Legends of Nitro 260 mph club for nitro funny cars in the semi’s .
Dan Horan’s strong run in round 2 also put him in to the Legends of Nitro 260 mph club with his pass of 5.740/261.52 placing him as the fifth member of the exclusive group. Kris Krabill and Dan Horan are currently # 1 & # 2 in the NHRA Heritage Racing Series point standings.
Why was the count down this year….well, several teams were on the East Coast competing in an event, a couple of teams were still in the painting stages with new schemes, yes they still paint in this class, not many vinyl wraps (yet). What was new this year was an engine combination ran by some of the quickest qualifiers…will we see more of this setup, only time will tell…what we do know is the chase will continue to reach faster E.T’s and faster MPH….stay tuned, this will be an exciting season!
